Mother of God of Nicea

Region: Russia
Period: Ca. 1800
Size: 30,5 x 25,5 cm

Description

This very rare iconography shows the Mother of God in an orante position (hands raised in prayer) and with her head slightly bent sideways. In front of her is an altar table with a chalice containing Christ Immanuel, the pre-existent Logos. The altar table and Christ are placed in a building that symbolizes the Christian Church. The iconography originated in the second half of the 16th century and can be regarded as a variant of the Mother of God of the Sign.
