Description

This monumental icon shows a special division of the surface. In the upper register, Christ is depicted in a green mandorla being carried to heaven by two angels. The footprints in the earth under the mandorla show that Christ stood on the earth shortly before.

The disciples left below look and point upwards. Two angels also point up and address the disciples. Between the two angels Mary, the Mother of God, stands in orante (praying position).

It is striking that the disciples are standing in front of the openings of a cave, a reference to the resurrection of Christ from the grave.
