Description

On this Advent icon, the Mother of God is depicted in a praying position (Orante), in half size, with raised hands. Before her, Christ is depicted as Immanuel. Mary’s head is flanked by a cherub and seraphim. A female saint has been added in the edge.

The icon is used in liturgy during Advent. On the third Sunday before Christmas, the text from Isaiah is read. In the iconostasis wall, the icon stands between the prophets who foretold the coming of the Messiah. The feast days of the Mother of God of the Sign are celebrated on March 28, July 20 and October 27.
