Nicholas the Wonderworker

Region: Russia (Rostov)
Period: Early 16th century
Size: 48.5 x 40 cm

Description

St Nicholas is depicted in half-sight. With his right hand he pronounces a blessing, while his left hand holds a gospel book. Out of respect, his hand is covered so as not to touch the book directly. This icon is a masterpiece from the Rostov region. Characteristic are the expressive graphic lines in the robe and the green palette with unsaturated, soft colours, which are much more transparent than, for example, icons from Novgorod from the same period.
