Peter and Paul

Region: Russia
Period: c. 1500
Size: 26 x 18.5 cm

Description

Peter and Paul are considered founders of the Church. Paul is associated with the Church of Rome, Peter with Eastern Orthodoxy. By depicting the apostles at equal height and side by side, it is emphasised that they are each other’s equals and that one is not inferior to the other.
This icon is a very early example of a house icon. Characteristic of this period are the different dimensions compared to later icons and the use of a sober and subdued palette. The elongated bodies and the serene expression of the two apostles give the icon a meditative character.
