Mother of God of Vladimir

Region: Northern Russia
Period: Late 17th century (vrezka)
Size: 31 x 26,5 cm

Description

The Mother of God of Vladimir is an icon of the Eleusa type (‘of Tenderness’). The Mother of God holds the Christ Child on her right arm and points at him with her left arm. This icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir is painted in sober colours, so that the focus is entirely on the expression of the faces of mother and child. This emphasizes the underlying theme of the impending suffering of the child. The 17th-century painting was placed on (then) new wood in the 19th century in order to preserve the icon.
