Lazarus, the brother of Mary and Martha, is seriously ill and his sisters send a messenger to tell Christ. When Christ finally comes to Lazarus, the man lies in the grave for three days. Christ commands Lazarus to come out of the tomb. The icon shows Lazarus still in his tombs, wrapped in his shroud. Mary and Martha kneel before Christ. Behind Christ are the apostles. The Feast of the Raising of Lazarus is important to Orthodox believers because it symbolizes not only Christ’s resurrection from the dead, but also the common people.
