Anastasis and Annunciation

Region: Russia
Period: 17th century
Size: 13,5 x 10,5 cm

Description

This rare small iconography was put on a new shelf in the 19th century to preserve it. A silver setting was also made at that time. The larger image is that of Easter; of Christ’s victory over the realm of death. Christ tramples down the gates of Hades and saves Adam and Eve from their tombs. Next to them are Old Testament figures. Above it is the Annunciation to the Mother of God. The Archangel Gabriel visits Mary and tells her that she is pregnant and will bear the son of God.
