Description

The word ‘Deesis’ is derived from the Greek word for ‘supplication’. A characteristic feature of the iconography of a Deesis is that a group of saints – in this case, two – turn towards Christ, who is depicted at the centre, in intercession. The purpose of this intercession is to implore mercy for all humanity. The saints stand to the left and right of Christ, their heads bowed towards him and usually with one hand extended towards him. The border of this icon also depicts a number of saints looking towards Christ, including George and Demetrius.
