Description

Zosima and Savvatij were the founders of the Transfiguration Monastery on the island of Solovki in the Arctic Ocean. In the year 1429, Savvatiy, together with another monk named German, arrived on the island of Bolshoy Solovki in a rickety little boat. There, they drove away the only inhabitants – a fisherman and his wife – in order to establish a hermitage and live as hermits. After Savvatiy’s death in 1435, German met the monk Zosima. Above the two saints is an image of the Mother of God of the Sign. The feasts of Zosima and Savvatiy are celebrated on 17 April and 27 September respectively.
