Triptych of the Mother of God of Korsun

Region: Russia
Period: 17th century
Size: 38.5 x 48.5 cm

Description

In this icon ‘of Tenderness’, the Mother of God bows her head over that of her child and has placed her left arm around his shoulder. Her right hand points towards the Christ Child whilst also supporting his head. The child has pressed his face against his mother’s, whilst holding her maphorion with his left hand. The absence of visible shoulders and arms enhances the expressiveness of the tender embrace between mother and child. The side panels of the triptych depict five feasts of the Virgin Mary. The dome above the central section depicts the Anastasis.
