The Greek word ‘Deesis’ means literally ‘plea’ or ‘entreaty’. Deesis icons usually show Christ flanked by the Mother of God and John the Forerunner (the Baptist), both acting as intercessors. This particular Deesis consists of three very finely painted panels and was probably meant for domestic worship.
